Understanding the data behind Australian school rankings

What is ICSEA?
ICSEA (Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage) is a measure published by ACARA that reflects the educational advantage of a school's student community. It accounts for parental education and occupation levels, and whether the school is in a remote area. The national average is 1000, with most schools falling between 900 and 1100.
Why is ICSEA only available for NSW?
This dataset sources ICSEA data from the NSW Department of Education open data portal, which includes ICSEA and FOEI values for government schools. Other states provide separate datasets through their own portals that do not include ICSEA in their published CSV files. ACARA's MySchool website has ICSEA for all schools nationally.
What is FOEI?
FOEI (Family Occupation and Education Index) is a component of ICSEA specific to NSW that measures socio-economic background based on parental occupation and education. A higher FOEI indicates a more advantaged student community.
Does a high ICSEA mean a better school?
No. ICSEA measures socio-educational advantage, not academic performance or school quality. Schools with low ICSEA scores often do remarkable work supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Use ICSEA as context, not as a ranking of school quality.
What does "selective school" mean in NSW?
Selective schools in NSW admit students based on academic merit through a state-wide selective school placement test. They consistently have very high ICSEA values because they attract high-achieving students from advantaged backgrounds. NSW has fully selective and partially selective schools.
Where does this data come from?
School data is sourced from official state and territory education department open data portals. NSW data includes ICSEA/FOEI from the NSW Department of Education. Queensland, Victoria, WA, SA, TAS, ACT and NT data is sourced from their respective education departments and the ACARA national schools dataset.
